Terror Mask

Added by ZombieKilla726An ancient relic of unspeakable power, the Terror Mask is bonded to Rick in each "Splatterhouse" game. It mutates Rick's body, granting him beyond superhuman strength and stamina. It is possessed by an unknown spirit, and can be considered a separate character, due to the fact that it constantly talks to Rick and guides his actions throughout the series.

Splatterhouse (2010)
Edit
The Terror Mask was an artifact owned by Dr. Henry West. It was discovered within an Aztec coffin, still attached to the withered and crumbling body of a past host. Through one of West's diary's, it is believed that he had the mask
Added by BernardWolfThe spirit within the Terror Mask is rude and violent, often reveling in the carnage Rick causes and insulting him when Rick fails at something. It serves as a source of information for Rick, giving commentary about creatures and locations it knows about and motivates him through insults. It tells Rick that for an eternity, it was a slave of The Corrupted, but it's unknown as to the extent of its servitude. It's responsible for the extinction of past civilizations, such as the Mayans or Aztecs, without even knowing which ones it wiped out.
Unfortunately, it turns out that the Mask's spirit has been manipulating Rick to a certain extent. In the end, when Dr. West tries to sacrifice Jennifer to the Corrupted, Rick prevents the sacrifice, but one of the Corrupted still manifests into Rick's dimension. It starts to create a giant body composed of all the creatures Rick has killed on his journey. The Mask explains that this was it's plan: sacrifice 10,000 souls to bring one of the Corrupted into the open, so it can have its own bloody revenge for what it called an eternity of agony. After defeating the Corrupted, the spirit revels in its victory, while Rick attempts to remove the Mask, though the spirit inside refuses to let go stating that their deal still isn't done, suggesting something is still wrong with Jennifer as the game ends.
Powers and Abilities
Edit
The Terror Mask grants several powerful abilities to its wearer, making them much more bulkier and Hulk-like compared to their normal appearance. It also has the ability to heal even the grievous wounds, such as deep lacerations and limb-loss. These abilities can become even stronger by absorbing all the blood shed by its victims. Finally, when enough blood has been absorbed, the wearer can transform even further, making them bigger than before, growing bone-like blades from their body, and allowing the Mask's spirit to take over temporarily. The Mask can also create portals when enough blood has been spilled by the host.
In the 2010 game, some of the Mask's quips after Rick dies suggest it also has the power to bring him back to life after the player chooses to continue.
Trivia
Edit
- The Terror Mask has always been known in Japan as the Hell Mask.
- In the original games, it is said that the Terror Mask was created by either the Mayans or the Aztecs. This could have been started due to a Mesoamerican Funeral Mask that resembles the Splatterhouse 2 Terror Mask.
- Due to criticisms based on the similarities in appearances of Rick's Terror Mask and the mask of Friday the 13th's Jason Voorhess, the Terror Mask was changed to resemble more of a skull in the Splatterhouse 2 game. This can be explained by the fact that the Mask shattered at the end of the first and reassembled, taking a different form in the process (however, in the 2010 remake, its design is taken from Splatterhouse 3, so it is possible that this is its canonical appearance).
- The spirit within the Terror Mask speaks to its host telepathically, meaning that Rick is the only one that can hear it. This can also explain it's knowledge of modern culture, as it can read Rick's mind.
- The spirit within the Terror Mask is voiced by Jim Cummings in the 2010 remake. Cummings provides the Mask with a humorous yet taunting and sarcastic wit, as well as an anachronistic knowledge of modern times and concepts.
- The Mask's spirit seems to have knowledge of it being a fictional character in a video game. By constantly making remarks on the game's name ("Show him why we call it....Splatterhouse") and the game's "M Rating" by the ESRB during Phase Four: The Meat Factory, thus effectively breaking the fourth wall. The Mask might also say "Can you hurry up and pick 'Continue'?" when Rick dies.
- In the 2010 Splatterhouse game, the Mask's eyes glow bright yellow whenever Rick kills an enemy. Also, as Rick gets soaked in blood while using the Chainsaw, a small section of of the Mask is left uncovered. Oddly, it resembles a smile.
- In the Japanese version of Splatterhouse 2, it looks like Vega's mask from the Street Fighter series. The American version looks like a skull. It is still unexplained why the creators made this change.
